In Nick Hornby’s – “A long ways down” one character called Jess, said: “Anyway, I do not owe Mum and dad anything.” (p.143). Now the question is, if children owe their parents something. In my point of view, the kids don’t owe their parents material things but fondness and that they parents know, that they know, that their kids are good grown up.

Jess says: “Anyway, I don’t owe Mum and dad anything.” (p.143).  Comment on this statement. To comment on a statement is a standard writing assignment – you will find some hints on how to write a good comment here:How-to comment

Your comment should be about 150-200 words and use the material given in the worksheet. You might want to comment on it within the framework of the novel (Jess’ point of view) or – more generally – from yourt own point of view (whether or not kids owe their parents anything).

Translation February 26, 2007

We dealt with the problem of register & style rather extensively. Coping with different registers is particularly demanding in translations / interpreations. You need to find the equivalent register in the target language – not easy. Nonetheless, we’ll give it a try. So, try to interpret a passage from Jess’ passage (p. 65 “I’m sorry, I went.” to p. 66 “…and we didn’t have anywhere to go.”)

Remember what we discussed regarding different taboos in different languages / cultures!

Put your texts into the blog (category translation).

As stated in the classroom, each of you will follow one of the novel’s characters especially closely.

  • How can the figure be characterized?
  • What do we get to know about the person’s life before New Year’s eve?
  • How does the character change / develop?
  • Analyse your character’s relationship and interaction with the other characters.

You are supposed to gather the information as part of your reading log here on the blog.
