LONDON, January 6 – Over 5000 suicides are committed per year in the United Kingdom. Being the tenth most common cause of death, the UK has one of the highest suicide rates in Europe. Nonetheless it remains a taboo subject which is hardly ever mentioned.

Now television presenter Martin Sharp brings his involvement in a suicide pact before the public. His final assertion of having seen an angel up on the roof has the unexpected effect of turning suicide into the center of attention in the media.

Probably in every teenager-life there are some moments where you have the feeling that there is nothing that holds you on living with your parents anymore. It is a difficult question to answer whether a child owes his or her parents anything – either money or justify.

They bring you up, they care for you – parents. There is a time in life when children ask themselves wether they owe their parents something or not. Just as one of the characters of the novel “A long way down”. Jess in contrast to many people feels absolutely not tied to hers: “I don’t owe Mum and Dad anything. ” She gives many reasons for this, whereas she reflects on her relation to her parents but also includes her thoughts on what her sister Jen could have felt, as she rather feels tied and related to her inspite of their differences.

In Nick Hornby’s – “A long ways down” one character called Jess, said: “Anyway, I do not owe Mum and dad anything.” (p.143). Now the question is, if children owe their parents something. In my point of view, the kids don’t owe their parents material things but fondness and that they parents know, that they know, that their kids are good grown up.

On the page 143, Jess said that she “did not owe mum and dad anything”. And this statement gives us a lot of information to think about. The question is for what reason, we , children, owe our parents so much? Maybe it is only because they gave us possibility to live and enjoy this life? Maybe a lot of people think so, but I do not. I do not speak about respect. Respect is a little bit other.

Do kids owe their parents anything or nothing?

First of all Parents have to prepare their children for their later life. They should educate them and teach them how to behave in public and in life generally. Also they should give them love and security. And if they do it in a right way and if the children feels good and comfortable, I think the kids owe a lot to their parents because they bring them on a good way for their later life.

Children often say, that they don´t owe their parents anything. Jess has the same opinion, because she thinks that her parents haven´t done anything for her. Now I want to comment this statement on my own point of view.

I want to comment Jess’ statement “Anyway, I don’t owe mum and dad anything.”, from my own point of view. Many children think that they don’t owe their parents anything, when they are eighteen, because they are adult and can do everything that they want to do. (more…)

Parents bring their children up, feed them and support them in every situation. They earn money just to make a good future possible for them. But does that mean that the children owe their parents anything? (more…)
